More time to file, not unlimited time to pay.
Filing by the extended deadline helps you avoid the failure-to-file penalty. If you owe, interest and late-payment penalties may still apply from the original due date. Pay what you can and finish your return as soon as you're able.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. A federal extension generally gives you more time to file your return, not more time to pay. If you owe tax, interest and late-payment penalties may apply from the original due date until you pay. Paying as much as you can by the due date helps limit what accrues.
You can still file your return by the extended deadline to avoid the failure-to-file penalty. If you can’t pay in full, pay what you can now and consider an IRS payment plan or other options. Interest and late-payment penalties may still apply on the unpaid balance.
If you e-filed Form 4868, you should receive an acknowledgment that the IRS accepted it. Keep that confirmation with your tax records. If you’re unsure, you can check your filing status or correspondence from the IRS.
For most individual filers, the extended due date to file your Form 1040 is October 15 (or the next business day if it falls on a weekend or holiday). Confirm your situation—some taxpayers, such as those overseas or affected by disasters, may have different rules.
Yes. If you’re due a refund, filing after the April due date doesn’t eliminate your refund for that year in most cases, though you should file within the IRS refund statute (generally three years from the original filing deadline to claim a refund). Filing sooner helps you get your money faster.
Yes. Where you filed your extension doesn’t lock you into that provider for your final return. You can prepare and file your completed Form 1040 with TaxAct as long as you have your income, deduction, and credit information.
If you file after the extended due date, you may be subject to failure-to-file penalties on any unpaid tax (plus interest and late-payment penalties that may already apply). File as soon as possible to limit additional charges.
If you have self-employment or other income not subject to withholding, making quarterly estimated payments can reduce underpayment penalties—even while you’re on extension. Your extension doesn’t replace estimated tax rules.
